Nothing compared in size to the Calgary Stampede

This is my story…

I grew up on a Manitoba dairy farm where we worked real hard all year long. 20 years ago, when I was 15, my body was reacting to stress so my parents thought it would be a good idea to fly me to Calgary to the Stampede. I knew I was in for a good time when I arrived at the airport and everything and everybody was dressed for Stampede! I felt right at home in the big city. I stayed at my god father’s place. I remember taking the LRT around to some of the activities including the parade. Even as a horse owner I was so impressed with the horse entries that I took a picture of each one. That would fill an entire photo album of its own! In case I missed something in the parade, my godfather taped it for me as well.

Line dancing was popular at the time and I remember dancing a lot of 2 step and line dancing at the Tent parties at the Stampede. The music bands were so good you HAD to dance to them. I was very proud to be able to teach line dancing at a local Ukrainian church that held a dance during Stampede week.

Of all the fairs I had been to in Manitoba, nothing compared in size to the Calgary Stampede. There were so many things to see and taste! I had a wood sign made for our family farm from one of the local vendors. The sign still hangs at the end of the farm driveway.

My husband of 14 years is a Team Roper and passionate about rodeo. For as long as he can remember he has taped and watched the Calgary Stampede to see every rodeo run. That has meant some really late nights for us here in Manitoba! We always enjoy watching the chuckwagon races as well. He has never actually been to the Calgary Stampede.

Every one of the past 20 years, I have wanted to return to the Stampede to take in all the activities and get in on all the excitement. I am elated that FINALLY this year my husband and I will be attending to take part in the 100 year celebration. I am very much looking forward to it!

Attached is a photo of us.
