There are only two seasons: Stampede and Christmas
Like many other Calgarians, the Stampede has always played a big part in our lives. My mom only had two seasons, Stampede and Christmas and it was an awfully long wait in between! She was a long-time fan and always got us kids up extra early for Parade day. Yes, we were one of those families sitting on the street at 5 a.m. in the sixties.
Even though she was a city gal, all things country applied to my mom at Stampede time and she enjoyed working on the AGT float for a few years. Once she sold our family house, she moved into an apartment in downtown Calgary, with the biggest reason being that it was located on the Parade route! For a long time my mom and dad hosted an annual Stampede BBQ in our backyard, and once they passed away, one of my sisters has continued the tradition. (I have certainly changed my summer travel plans in order to attend this 12-hour party!) I am attaching a few photos to provide you with a sense of what the Stampede has meant to us over the years. As a matter of fact, we have a memorial bench in mom's honor somewhere on the Stampede Park - the place where she was happiest.
Thanks for the opportunity to share our story.
Sincerely, Roxanne Nadeau
