My great grandfather, William Henry Fletcher, known as "Dad Fletcher" or "Rutabaga Bill", was a winner of the Old Time Fiddler's Contest in approximately 1926 which was "staged" by the Calgary Stampede and Exhibition Board at the Palliser Hotel. He was in his 70s when he won the event and was the winner of several other fiddling contests as well during this time. I have attached an article from the Calgary Herald that has been kept in our family and thought you might be interested if you are still looking for stories of past Stampede experiences. The article that I have attached does not show a date, but other articles that are in our possession and were done around the same time indicate being printed on Wednesday, September 8, 1926 of the Calgary Daily Herald.
My cousin is still in possession of the fiddle and a trophy that were used during this time. We are long time Albertans who look forward to celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede this year - congratulations and may there be another hundred!
