My First View of Calgary and the Stampede

My first Calgary Stampede was in 1949. I travelled by train in what was called a "palace car" loaded with 16 thoroughbred horses from Winnipeg to Calgary.  I had just signed a contract to be an apprentice jockey and was enroute to Calgary to gallop horses at the racetrack at Stampede Park. My first view of Calgary and the Stampede was when the train pulled in the station in Calgary, there was a streetcar going along 9th Ave. with some cowboy's horse tied to the back of the streetcar. That was my first memory of my first Calgary Stampede. 59 years later in 2008, I rode in my first Calgary Stampede Parade!
